Nowadays, almost all modern communications systems implement an IP based design using TCP/IP protocols. Legacy industrial networks are more likely to run serial protocols such as Modbus RTU, Profibus and EtherCAT.

In order to integrate both types of networks, protocol conversion is necessary and gateways must be used to address the devices connected on the serial network.
